This in an abstract for a proposal for SCALE 8X talk – Open Source Model of Organizational Governance

Open Source came a long way from a fringe movement that was considered altruistic in nature and anti-capitalist in spirit. Over time became increasingly clear that open source is not only better way to write and distribute software, but also simply a better way to do business. Connected Capitalism seems to do better when applied to a software development environment. By seeking efficiencies and finding synergies open source projects organized into communities and eventually into large conglomerates such as Apache Software Foundation and OW2 Consortium. These conglomerates have put in place an organizational governance system to manage their day-to-day operational needs that functions remarkably well considering distributed nature of open source communities and diversity of the people involved. This session is going to look at various aspects of organizational governance and philosophies that guide open source communities and applicability of these approaches to the companies at large.
